UPDATE 2-Soccer-Bayern sign Spain midfielder Martinez

* Bayern sign Martinez for reported German record
* Martinez departure a hefty blow for Bilbao
(Adds details)
MUNICH, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich have completed the
signing of Athletic Bilbao's Spain midfielder Javi Martinez, the
Bundesliga side said on Wednesday, in a deal widely reported to
be worth a German record of 40 million euros ($49.20 million).
Martinez, 23, had rescinded his contract with Bilbao - which
had a buyout clause of 40 million euros - and been given
permission to join Bayern by the Spanish football federation
(RFEF) and the professional football league (LFP), Bayern said
in a statement on their website (www.fcbayern.telekom.de).
He has passed a medical and was available to play
immediately.
"This was without question a complicated transfer so we are
all the happier that Javi Martinez is finally with us," Bayern
CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said of the negotiations which have
dragged on for several weeks.
Before Bayern confirmed the deal, Bilbao said in a statement
that Martinez had travelled to Germany without their permission
on Tuesday to finalise the move and they had asked him for an
explanation.
Raised at Osasuna, Martinez was signed by Bilbao as a
17-year-old in 2006 and has played for Spain at all age levels.
He flourished last season under coach Marcelo Bielsa, helping
his team reach the finals of the King's Cup and the Europa
League.

BOTH COMPETITIONS
Bayern are desperate to win a title this season after
finishing as runners-up in the Bundesliga and German Cup last
term, beaten by Borussia Dortmund in both competitions.
Bayern, also runners-up in last season's Champions League,
have insisted that they can afford the versatile Martinez who
can play either in central defence or in midfield.
The Bavarians, who set the previous record of 35 million
euros when they signed striker Mario Gomez from VfB Stuttgart
three years ago, are proud of their reputation as a club with
solid finances who live within their means.
However, a series of nagging injuries to playmaker Bastian
Schweinsteiger has prompted them to look for other options in
the centre of midfield.
"He's a type of player we don't have at the moment," said
sporting director Matthias Sammer this month, while club
president Uli Hoeness had that the deal that it would not break
the bank.
"Bayern have ambitious targets and we can afford it," he
said. "We've worked for decades so that we don't have to go to
the credit department for a transfer like this."
Although Martinez was in the Spain squad which won the 2010
World Cup and Euro 2012, he has only won eight caps and many are
baffled as to why Bayern have forked out so much for a player
who is not a regular international.
Former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, now in charge of the
Switzerland national team, has suggested that the expectation
could weigh heavily on Martinez.
Bayern also announced that the Spaniard would be given the
number eight shirt once worn by West Germany international Paul
Breitner. His contract is for five years.
Bilbao had made it clear they wanted to hold on to both the
Martinez and his Spain team mate Fernando Llorente, who has said
he wants to leave and has been linked in media reports with a
move to Italian champions Juventus.
The uncertainty over the pair's future has disrupted the
Basque club's start to the season and they are bottom of La Liga
after losing their opening two matches.

Pique: Super Cup won't decide La Liga

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is surprised at Real Madrid's poor start to the season but he does not believe the result of Wednesday's second leg of the Spanish Super Cup between the two clubs will have any long-term effect on their battle for the La Liga title.

Madrid head into the second leg at the Bernabeu still searching for their first victory of the season after three matches.

In La Liga they are already five points behind Barca after being held at home by Valencia before losing 2-1 at local rivals Getafe on Sunday, while last Thursday they were beaten 3-2 by the Catalans in the first leg of the Super Cup at the Nou Camp.

That is hardly the start Jose Mourinho would have been looking for and another setback against Barca on Wednesday would be a bitter pill to swallow for the capital club, who supplanted their archrivals as Spanish champions last season.

However, Pique does not believe a Barca triumph in the Super Cup will strike a terminal blow to Madrid's title defense.

"It's surprising that Madrid have lost five points in two games. They'd been unbeaten in the league since December, but Madrid are Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they could put together a 30-match winning streak," he said.

"I don't think that the result (Wednesday) will have any influence on the league. Whoever wins the league is the most consistent over 38 games, not the two that we've played up until now. No matter how many points there are between us now, the season is very long."

Mourinho claimed Tuesday that a victory on Wednesday night isn't important. He just wants to see an improved attitude from his struggling club.

"To win the Super Cup or not to win the Super Cup, to beat Barca or not to beat Barca ... none of that is important to me right now.

"I have very specific priorities right now, and my priority is to find out if the attitude we had against Getafe has been an occasional situation, or if this situation is a consequence of a certain psychological profile some players and the team might have built. For me, that's the most important thing for tomorrow."

Madrid's hopes have been boosted by the arrival of Croatia playmaker Luka Modric, who completed his long-anticipated move to Spain from Tottenham on Monday.

Modric trained with his new teammates Monday night but it remains to be seen if he will be involved in Wednesday's match having had a lack of competitive action over the last few months.

Nevertheless, Pique believes Madrid have got themselves a fine player.

"He's very good. We played against him in the European Championships. He has a good touch. We'll see how he settles in," the Spain international said.

Barca, who are looking to win their fourth successive Spanish Supercopa, could still be led into action by captain Carles Puyol despite the defender suffering a fractured cheekbone in Sunday's comeback win over Osasuna.

Puyol will train with Barca on Tuesday and coach Tito Vilanova will then decide whether or not to include the veteran defender in his team.

Mourinho will also need to decide whether or not to throw Modric straight into action, although the 26-year-old playmaker insists he is ready to go.

"I feel good. I'm ready and the coach will decide if I play or not. It's one of the biggest games in world football," Modric said Monday at his introductory news conference.

Regarding Madrid's disappointing start to the campaign, Modric added: "I've seen the three games and I can only say one thing: It's not important how you start the league but how you finish.

"There's still a lot of games left in the league and we still haven't started the Champions League or Copa del Rey."

Information from Press Association was used in this report.

Spain: Falcao leads Atletico to rout of Bilbao

MADRID (AP) -- Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao scored a hat trick Monday as his team thrashed Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in the teams' first meeting since the Europa League final last season.

Falcao scored twice in the 3-0 victory in Romania in May and could have scored more at the Vicente Calderon as Bilbao continued to struggle without Spain internationals Fernando Llorente and Javi Martinez, who were omitted from the squad again with their futures at the Basque club uncertain.
Atletico couldn't have asked for a better warm-up ahead of Friday's European Super Cup, which pits it against Champions League winner Chelsea and former player Fernando Torres.

"We're in good shape and we're happy and now we have to prepare for the Super Cup,'' said Falcao, who scored 36 goals in all competitions last season. "Now I want to improve on my numbers from last season.''

Falcao opened after receiving a throw-in from Filipe Luis that he carried past defender Mikel San Jose before chipping goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz for the 20th-minute opener in the Spanish league match.

The Colombia striker's athleticism allowed him to meet Diego Godin's looping cross at the far post with an acrobatic volley to make it 2-0 in the 42nd.
Falcao created the third as Carlos Gurpegui blocked his pass with his hand inside the area to set up a 59th-minute penalty the Atletico striker converted for his third goal.

Only Iraizoz kept Falcao and the rest of his Atletico teammates from adding to the scoreline with a number of clutch stops before Tiago completed the emphatic victory with a rising shot into the roof of the net in the 84th.
Athletic coach Marcelo Bielsa may find himself under pressure after conceding nine goals in two consecutive league losses, especially with Llorente and Martinez's situation obviously distracting.

"The coach never counts on all players for a game, he always leaves some out,'' said club president Jose Urrutia, who added the club had no intention of negotiating the players' exit.

"It's not in our hands. They are Athletic players and we hope to count on them but there are two conditions - that Athletic is not interested or that they pay the buy-out clause. And neither of those conditions have been met.''

Juventus is reportedly interested in Llorente, whose buy-out clause is valued at ?36 million ($45 million). Bayern Munich is chasing Martinez with the defender/midfielder netting ?40 million ($50 million) for any transfer.

Meanwhile, promoted Valladolid joined Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano as the only teams with two straight wins to start the season after it scored both penalties in a 2-0 win over 10-man Levante.

Defender David Navarro handled inside the area for a second booking and red card to set up Victor Perez's 38th-minute penalty at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium. Perez stepped up to score another spot kick in the 48th to secure the victory.

Real Madrid's shock 2-1 loss at Getafe left it with a single point from two rounds and five points adrift of Barcelona, which needed late goals from Lionel Messi on Sunday to rally back for a 2-1 win at Osasuna. The Spanish giants meet in the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday - when new Madrid signing Luka Modric could debut - with Barcelona leading 3-2 after the first leg.

Barcelona Vs. Real Madrid, 2012 Spanish Super Cup: The First Of A Half-Dozen Clasicos

WHO WINS?

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid Match Preview

August the start of  Spanish Supercup, the first battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid for the 2012-2013.

You pass some data: 1) Mourinho has only won 1 game at the Camp Nou. He has played 8 times.
((2) Barcelona has won the last 3 on 3 Scudetto) the last official game was a defeat for the Barca.

With the return leg still to come next Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu, Mourinho will probably set up a defensive team and attempt to nick an away goal on the counter. Barcelona are favorites to win the first leg, but if their win comes by one goal with Real Madrid grabbing an away goal, that will suit Los Blancos just fine and will give them a great chance to overturn the result at home.

The first leg of the Spanish Super Cup kicks off at 4:30AM GMT+8 on Thursday from Camp Nou in Barcelona.

Song told me he wants to join Barcelona, says Malaga's Kameni

The former Espanyol player says the central midfielder told him whilst they were on holiday together that he would like to join the Catalan giants

Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni believes his compatriot Alex Song would 'fit in at Barcelona', claiming he learnt of the Arsenal midfielder's desire make the move to Spain while the two were on vacation together.
The Blaugrana have been strongly linked with a move for the Cameroon international following Seydou Keita's move to Chinese Super League side Dalian Aerbin earlier this summer.

Song's international team-mate thinks the 24-year-old would be a smart acquisition for the Liga runners-up, and has said that Song has told him he wants to join Tito Vilanova's side.

"We were together on vacation. He [Song] would like to go to Barcelona, any player would like to. Barcelona are not one of the best in the world, but the best," Kameni told Cope Catalunya.

"[Song would] fit in at Barcelona," he continued. "He has all the features to play there. We all know what kind of player Barcelona like and he is one of them.

Kameni spoke of how the Gunner bears a resemblance to one of Barcelona's former players: "He is like Yaya Toure, but with much more mobility. He is very mobile but can also pass well. He is a complete player."

He also commented on how Song has progressed rapidly in recent seasons: "Alex has demonstrated how good he is during his time with Arsenal. He has always progressed well, but his last two years have been spectacular.

"He is a very focused kid, with his head in the right place. He always wants to improve and is willing to listen to others and work on his weaknesses.

"He is a hard worker and is very versatile, which makes him a very good team player."

The player himself recently indicated that Barcelona had shown an interest in him, but denied that he wants to leave Arsenal for the Spanish giants.

Song joined Arsene Wenger's side from French team Bastia for €1.3 million in 2005, and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the club.

Malaga Season Preview

From what appeared to be a season stating their intent, the situation at Malaga has suddenly changed in the past few days. Reports have emerged over unpaid wages and transfer fees which could result in UEFA having to take firm action on the Champions League newcomers. Malaga could incur serious penalties and see players leave just as their illustrious world-conquering dream begins to take shape.
Star player Santi Cazorla has been one of Los Boquerones to make his unhappiness known about the current situation has since been sold to Arsenal. A rumoured 30-40% of the players’ wages have not been paid and Cazorla’s transfer fee from Villarreal is still yet to be fully completed.
Owned by a member of the Qatari Royal Family, Malaga have risen up from relative obscurity in their bid to rival Spanish football’s two giants. Heavily bankrolled by the Middle-Eastern owners, Malaga brought in quality players such as Jeremy Toulalan, Joaquin, Isco, Nacho Monreal and Cazorla last summer but the fabled ambition is in threat of collapsing due to the problems behind the scenes.

As is with football oligarcy, plentiful sums of the owner’s money is ploughed into a team believing instant success awaits. Whatever the situation, if Malaga don’t have money available from the Sheikhs then in reality they cannot sustain the weight of players or expectation they’ve taken on.
Until more envelopes, we can’t really predict how much Malaga will progress next season. If it is just Cazorla who exits then Malaga lose their most impressive player of last season and the loss will take many more millions to fill. As of yet no transfers have commenced which suggests real turmoil within the club and a potential slide down the table.
To jump to the next step of the Spanish football hierarchy, Malaga must now prove themselves by challenging Real Madrid and Barcelona for the title. However, the game against Madrid at home showed the South coast side what they were up against. Cristiano Ronaldo plundered a hat-trick within 45 minutes as Malaga were blown away by the title winners in a 4-0 defeat.
Even without the boardroom crisis, Malaga are another league away from seriously threatening the dominance of Barca and Real.
For the time being, progress is vital, especially for manager Manuel Pellegrini. Going beyond the group stage in the Champions League or enjoying a cup run may just keep him employed in the immediate future as Malaga, ideally, build up towards mounting a realistic title challenge in the next five years.

London Olympics: Spain survive British basketball scare

London Olympics: Spain survive British basketball scare

LONDON: Reigning European champions Spain's squad of NBA standouts just held off a late charge from rank outsiders Great Britain for a 79-78 win Thursday and a men's Olympic basketball medal playoff berth.

Jose Calderon led Spain with 19 points and sank crucial free throws in the final seconds to hold off minnows Britain, led by 25 points from Joel Freeland and 23 from NBA Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng.

Pau Gasol added 17 as Spain clinched a quarter-final berth and ensured one for Russia, the two being Group B co-leaders at 3-0, while the British squad fell to 0-3, on the brink of being eliminated from playoff contention.

The Spaniards stretched their lead to 60-48 entering the fourth quarter but Deng sparked a stunning British rally, the Olympic hosts making a 9-2 run to pull within 68-65 on an inside jump by Pops Mensah-Bonsu with 3:18 remaining.

Gasol added two free throws and his brother Marc Gasol another to give Spain a 71-65 advantage but Freeland sank a jumper with 2:00 to play and added a layin with 1:25 remaining to pull Britain within two points at 71-69 behind.

The home rowd screamed for Britain to pull off the upset but turnovers by Deng and Mensah-Bonsu led to four points for Spain.

Dan Clark answered for Britain by hitting a 3-pointer to cut Spain's edge to 75-72 and, after Calderon sank two free throws with 25 seconds remaining, Nate Reinking's 3-pointer for Britain made it 77-75.

Calderon made two more free throws with 17 seconds remaining, but Britain responded yet again, centre Mensah-Bonsu sinking a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining leaving them just a point behind,

Calderon took the inbounds pass for Spain and raced around the backcourt, eluding British players desperate to foul him and stop the clock. Instead, the final seconds ticked away and the Spaniards had survived an epic scare.

Spain captain Juan Carlo Navarro missed his second game in a row with a left foot injury.

12BET | West Ham agree Carroll loan fee

West Ham United have agreed a £2m loan fee with Liverpool for Andy Carroll.

The season-long deal for the England striker could result in a £17m transfer at the end of the campaign, provided the Hammers stay in the Premier League.

However, it is thought the 23-year-old Carroll does not wish to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis.

The Reds, who paid a

club-record fee of £35m for Carroll

in January 2011, have

already turned down Newcastle United’s bid to re-sign the player.

Carroll has struggled since his big-money move to Liverpool, scoring just 11 goals in 56 appearances.

He now appears to be surplus to requirements at Anfield following the arrival of former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers and Italian striker

Fabio Borini from Roma.

Rodgers had said Liverpool

would not consider a loan move

for Carroll but now appears prepared to allow the player to link up with former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce at Upton Park.

Carroll had also been linked with a transfer to Italian side AC Milan.

The striker began his career at Newcastle, spending a season on loan at Preston, before returning to the club and becoming top-scorer in the 2009-10 season as the Magpies returned to the Premier League.

Carroll collected a League Cup winner’s medal with Liverpool last season, starting in the Wembley final against Cardiff City.
